The United Church of Christ is a socially and theologically progressive denomination which was at the forefront of a number of firsts. It was the first major denomination in America to ordain as clergy, a black man, a woman, and a gay man.
Our local Brookings congregation began in 1989 as a church plant which met in the gymnasium of Medary Elementary. In 1999 a church building was constructed on 8th St. South where we meet today. Since then, our building has been used to foster education and service to our community. The Brookings Backpack program is an example of a mission who was born in our church, and has since become its own non-profit organization.
Today we continue to seek new and ongoing ways to serve and educate not only our own congregation, but our neighbors as well. MLK once said, “The moral arc of the universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” We intend to continue bending it!
